Someone said to me recently that she cut all the flowers off her Hostas.
I asked her why.
She said ‘Because the flowers are nothing special.’
So I am supposing that her Hosta flowers are very different to these:
Or maybe these
Both of which I had thought were quite ordinary flowers.
But am I cutting the flowers off?
Heck, no!

Well, she’s not looking close enough. And lets hope she doesn’t have the same approach to people!

Dear Robert, Perhaps it will come as no surprise to you to learn that I am in the ‘cut their heads off’ brigade. Or, rather, to be more exact, directing and overseeing the beheading operation.
I often wonder if I would have been in the crowd knitting at public executions…..but, sadly, I cannot knit!

Madame Hope does not have quite the ring of Madame Lafarge!
And you are making more work for poor J!
Thanks for the comment.

It depends on the hostas, surely? Some (sieboldiana) are squat and quite defacing.
And if you cut them down when the flowers are over (maybe you do that?) it’s no extra work to cut the ugly ones down when they are new. It’s just sooner….
Not sure that discrimination makes people bad, but then – I can knit…

I consider flowers on my hosta a victory of sorts…over the many deer that ‘share’ my garden and consider hosta a gourmet feast. I don’t have many hosta for that exact reason but this year they all flowered, some for the first time and the flowers were simple but lovely.

Yes I know what you mean, it is a struggle so much with these particular plants, so why would you not allow them their crowning glory?
And they have been universally lovely this year!
There is something about the smokey hue of their colour which I love.
Thanks for your comment.

I suppose ‘all hosta flowers are lovely’ merits its place alongside ‘all gardens are lovely’!
